اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi'lladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa-ilayhi n-nushūr.
All praise is due to Allah, who brought us to life after He caused us to die. And He is the One who will raise us again and gather us before Him.

Narrated by Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke from sleep, he would recite this dua. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Da'awat 7-8; Sahih Muslim, Dhikr 59; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 28)
Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke from sleep, he would say 'Al-ḥamdu lillāhi'lladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa-ilayhi n-nushūr'" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Da'awat 7; Sahih Muslim, Dhikr 59). The believer who wakes and sees that he has regained his strength, his power and his ability to move, both praises and thanks Allah Most High by saying, "All praise is due to Allah, who brought us to life after He caused us to die."
The phrase "wa-ilayhi n-nushūr" (And He is the One who will raise us again and gather us before Him) sets forth the faith that Allah is the only being who will truly bring us back to life and gather us before Him after real death as well, and not merely after the metaphorical death that is sleep. Whoever does all this consciously has given voice to his faith in Almighty Allah's absolute disposal over himself and over all created things, and has performed reflection, which is an important act of worship.
In another narration the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would also say upon waking: "All praise is due to Allah, who returned my soul to me, kept my body in good health, and permitted me to remember Him" (al-Nawawi, al-Adhkar 21). Both duas may be recited upon waking in the morning.
O Allah, You are the One who brought me back to life after causing me to die. I begin this new day, to which You have granted me to wake, by praising You. You are the One who returns my soul to me, keeps my body in well-being, and permits me to remember You. Grant that I pass this day in goodness and blessing. My final return is to You, O Lord. Amin.
