بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ
One Who Begins Forgetfully:
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِرِهِ
Bismillāh.
One Who Begins Forgetfully: Bismillāhi fī awwalihi wa-ākhirih.
In the name of Allah.
One Who Begins Forgetfully: In the name of Allah, at its beginning and at its end.
Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 3767 (sahih hadith).
Narrated by Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you is about to eat, let him say Bismillah. If he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, let him say 'Bismillāhi fī awwalihi wa-ākhirih.'" (Sunan Abi Dawud, At'imah 16; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, At'imah 48; Sunan Ibn Majah, At'imah 7)
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was eating together with six people when a bedouin came and finished the food in two mouthfuls. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'If he had said Bismillah, it would have been enough for all of you.'" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, At'imah 48) This hadith shows that Bismillah is the key to blessing.
Umar ibn Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) was eating beside the Prophet as a child. His hand was going all over the plate. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "My son! Say Bismillah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you." (Sahih al-Bukhari, At'imah 2; Sahih Muslim, Ashribah 108) This hadith stresses the importance of teaching children the etiquette of eating and Bismillah from a young age.
Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "When we ate together with the Prophet, we would not eat without saying Bismillah." (Sahih Muslim, Ashribah 103) This narration, which shows the noble Companions' attachment to the sunnah of the Prophet, makes clear that Bismillah is indispensable to the etiquette of eating.
O Allah, You are the One who has bestowed this provision upon me. Give me lawful provision and grant me blessing in what I eat. Make this meal, which I begin by saying Bismillah, a means of strength in my body, power in worship, and steadfastness in obedience. Give provision to the hungry, and make us among those who give thanks, O Lord. Amin.
